My first week in Russia

21.07.2019

My friends and family always tell me that despite being a medical student, I have a tendency to dive into things head first. This EVS is no exception to that rule. Of course, I had certain expectations or let's say thoughts about my work here in Smolensk or Russian society, some have been met and regarding others I've been proven wrong -not that that's a bad thing either. For example, I don't know where I got the idea that Russian people are a bit cold? I couldn't have been further from the truth if I tried. The people here have welcomed us with open arms, the children seem enthusiastic, some a bit shy -absolutely understandable- but definitely excited and happy to have us. Is it difficult? Yes, the language barrier is very real and rather scary, but hey, the challenge is part of the fun. Having worked with children and young people ever since I was old enough to volunteer, I find myself enjoying this very much. Pair this with three lovely fellow volunteers, mix well and you get a wonderful first week. Hopefully the next few weeks will hold both excitement and learning experiences, but honestly it seems that I'm in for an amazing summer.
